Course Description

  • English 10 is a required course for the Alabama High School Diploma. This is a survey course that will explore in depth and breadth a variety of genres of writing and literature as the students not only develop their understanding and appreciation for literature, but also an improvement in their writing. This course will cover the following major works of literature - some in their entirety, some as excerpts: The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Patillo Beals, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Anthem by Ayn Rand, and Animal Farm by George Orwell. Students will also write at least one documented essay and at least one research paper. Other projects, works of literature, and assignments will be assigned throughout the semester to teach, challenge, and enhance the students’ understanding of grammar, literature, and writing.


    Creative Writing is a hands-on writing course that explores the various facets and genres of writing. Students will write in a variety of styles and modes from poetry to stream-of-consciousness to scripts. Students who enjoy writing and reading creative writing will be given the opportunity to exercise that part of their brains. In this class, students will also create works to submit to Sparkman’s Literary Magazine, Silhouette, which is a student-created publication

    Creative Writing II / Literary Magazine is a hands-on writing course that explores the various facets and genres of writing and publishes a student Literary Magazine, Silhouette. Through this course, students who enjoy writing and reading creative writing will be given the opportunity to exercise that part of their brains, as well as students who are artistic and talented with graphic design will have the opportunity to utilize those strengths. In this class, students are also expected to participate in fundraising and other components of creating and publishing a magazine. There will also be opportunities for competition and field trips.
