Student and Parent Responsibilities

  • Parents and guardians play a critical role in the online learning environment.  Virtual students require an increased level of autonomy and self-motivation, and studies show that there is a direct positive correlation between parent involvement and student success.  The best educational experience is achieved when parents and students work together with the teachers and school administrators.

    Parent Responsibilities:

    • Monitor progress to ensure that all coursework is completed on time, and that the student is logging in each day to meet the attendance requirement. Your child may need assistance with developing a schedule for themselves and setting goals.  The teachers and staff at MCVA will  assist with this, but we can be even more successful if we work as a team.

    • Communicate frequently with your child’s teacher to address any concerns. Read and respond to all school correspondence as needed.  Let the school know as soon as possible if there is an issue that prevents the student from working at home.

    • Provide transportation to mandatory learning labs.  Allow students to participate in extracurricular activities, such as field trips and clubs, as often as possible.

    • Create a workspace for your child that is free from distractions.  Provide a laptop or Chromebook, and an internet connection.

    • Provide positive feedback  to your child.  Praise their successes and display their work just as you would in traditional school.  Surround them with examples of the positive things they are accomplishing.

    Student Responsibilities

    • Utilize time management and organization skills to complete assignments within due dates, and manage course materials and content effectively.

    • Communicate appropriately to seek help when needed.  Always use a respectful tone.  School email and messaging through the learning platform are acceptable methods.

    • Log in daily by 12:00 am (midnight) to be counted present.

    • Comply with all in-person and Google Meet requirements, including mandatory learning labs, grade level/course meetings, and assessments.

    • Maintain a good study environment.  Avoid websites and  games. Silence your phone. Make sure your space is comfortable, quiet and well-lit.
