Principal's Message

  • Dear Sparkman Middle School Family,

Welcome to the 2021-22 school year! My name is Jennifer Whitt and I am honored to serve you and your child as the principal of Sparkman Middle School. I have been either a student, parent, or educator in the Sparkman family of schools for over 40 years. Twenty two of those years have been spent as a teacher, coach, or administrator at Sparkman Middle School.

We are blessed to have faculty and staff who are incredibly invested in our school. Sparkman Middle School was recently recognized as a National Model PLC School, one of only 4 in the state of Alabama and 200 in the entire world. This recognition is a direct reflection of the willingness of our staff to go above and beyond on a daily basis to ensure ALL students are learning at high levels. I am continually amazed by their dedication and love for our students.

Last school year was one for the history books. The pandemic created many obstacles for us to overcome but with your support and the hard work of our elite faculty and staff we have and will continue to persevere. We had over 5000 student absences due to quarantine alone last school year and that does not include days missed due to virtual learning, hybrid instruction, or other missed days for various reasons. We have much ground to make up and we are counting on your support and partnership to make school attendance and participation a top priority for your child. Our students deserve the very best and that means they need us working together as a team to make them successful in school and in life.

Many improvements have been made to our campus over the past couple of years, inside and out, with much more to come. Hopefully, you will finally see some of the changes first hand on Open House Night, August 12th at 6:00 PM. Our goal is to not only make SMS a beautiful campus that we can be proud of but also, the safest and most secure environment for our students and staff.

We can’t wait to see you and your students in person this year starting August 4th. Collectively, we are strong, innovative, and fearless in the pursuit of providing students with opportunities for growth and achievement. I encourage you to reach out to my staff and I anytime with your questions and concerns. I look forward to another year of working with an outstanding team of educators, students, and parents to create a place where kids want to come to school and teachers want to come to work. Go Cougars!

    Jennifer H. Whitt
